Trainer Andreas Wöhler completed a classic double when Full Rose (Aqlaam) ran out a narrow winner of the German 1,000 Guineas at Düsseldorf last Sunday, just six days after Karpino (Cape Cross) had won the colts´ equivalent race at Cologne. The Düsseldorf race was however a very close affair, with ten of the fourteen runners still holding a chance at the distance, and only just over two lengths covering the first seven home at the line. Full Rose finished fast and late, but was certainly the best horse on the day and won on merit, although there were some hard luck stories as usual at this track, notably Bourree (Siyouni), who almost slipped up on the path crossing the track a furlong and a half out, while the steady rain had turned the ground soft, which certainly inconvenienced the expected favourite, Fährhof´s homebred La Saldana  (Fastnet Rock) as well as  Irish challenger Letters of Note (Azamour).

Full Rose was bred by Richard Tucker at his Nelson Farm Stud in Devon and was sold for just 6,000 euros to Rabbah Bloodstock at Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sales. She did not run at all last year, when she was in Ireland, and came to Andreas Wöhler with several other three-year-olds owned by Jaber Abdullah during the winter. She has now won all her three starts for the Ravensberg trainer, all at Düsseldorf and always partnered by the stable´s second jockey Jozef Bojko. She is one of the best runners sired by Aqlaam, who died tragically early after just three years at the Nunnery Stud. He was a miler pure and simple, and expectations are that Full Rose will also be best at this trip, although her third dam Roseate Tern (Blakeney) won the Yorkshire Oaks, so a certain amount of stamina is also present.

Runner-up Nymeria (Soldier Hollow) was bred by Gestüt Park Wiedingen out of a black type winning mare by Silver Hawk; she was sold at BBAG for 68,000 euros and is now owned by Albrecht Woeste, president of the Direktorium.  She should certainly stay the Preis der Diana trip of eleven furlongs and that looks the obvious target for her. She led for a long way, but had no answer to the finishing speed of Full Rose. The British challenger Terror (Kodiac) had every chance at the distance but failed to stay and is now likely to go down in trip, while the Irish hope Letters of Note, as mentioned above, could not handle the rain-soaked ground. These two will both be making up for these below par efforts before long.

Wöhler himself was not at Düsseldorf but was saddling Full of Beauty in the Oaks d´Italia, but the Motivator filly, also owned by Jaber Abdullah and transferred to Wöhler from Ireland during the close season, failed by just a head to peg back another German-trained filly, Ittlingen´s homebred  Lovelyn (Tiger Hill); she is from Ittlingen´s best family as her dam Laurella is a full sister to champion Lando. She is trained by Peter Schiergen, winning the Italian Oaks for the fourth time; one of his previous winners was subsequent Arc and King George winner Danedream (Lomitas), but he was quick to reject any comparison of that superstar with this year´s winner. She is one of two likely Preis der Diana hopes in the yard, the other being Stall Nizza's homebred Nightflower  (Dylan Thomas), a three-quarters sister to Group One winner Nymphea, who defeated Wöhler´s Arles (Monsun) in the Diana-Trial at Hoppegarten a fortnight ago.

Wöhler did not enter Full of Beauty, also bred by Richard Tucker,  in the Preis der Diana, and she could run next at Deauville. The trainer will be at Epsom on Saturday to run Qatar Racing´s Rogue Runner (King´s Best)  in the Derby. He is only an outsider but the trainer expects a good performance, especially if the ground continues to dry out. “He cannot act on the soft, as we saw at Frankfurt last time, but he stays well and if the ground is in his favour, I would expect him to finish in the money” he states with confidence. Another German runner abroad this weekend is Stall Salzburg's Magic Artist (Iffraaj) who runs in the Manhattan Stakes, a million dollar race on the Belmont Stakes undercard; this is another one whose connections are hoping the track will dry out after rain earlier in the week.

There is no rain expected at Baden-Baden, where the Spring Meeting is on this week and where the temperature is predicted to hit 33 degrees on Friday – the day of the breeze-up sales. That will make life difficult for all concerned, but this is the sale where Danedream was sold for 9,000 euros five years ago and possibly a similar bargain will be found today.
